Residents in the flood zone have expressed concern on social media about random visitors to their homes claiming to be assessors, but Resilience NSW assures them that one group of people is legitimately there to help.
Resilience NSW's Mobile Recovery Street Teams are now going door-to-door in Lismore, to provide extra support and information to help keep locals up-to-date with recovery services currently on offer.
The door knocking program has begun in South Lismore on the following streets:
- Caniaba Street;
- Casino Street (west of Caniaba Street);
- Charlton Avenue;
- Elliott Road;
- Engine Street;
- Kyogle Street;
- Meadow Drive;
- Newbridge Street; and
- Phillis Street.
Minister for Emergency and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery Steph Cooke said it's important people in flood-affected communities know what support is on offer, and how to access it.
"As the recovery progresses, more residents will return to their homes and it is vital they continue to be supported as they work to rebuild their lives," Ms Cooke said.
"With these Mobile Recovery Street Teams visiting households, residents will be supported to access the information and services they need from the NSW Government.
"Through this outreach program, Resilience NSW is also providing residents with immediate assistance in the form of food hampers as well as information on a range of financial, mental health and accommodation support."
Lismore MP Janelle Saffin was pleased to see teams on the ground after her repeated calls for the service.
"I know they were needed weeks, even months ago, but they are here now. I welcome the services on the ground with our community where they are needed," Ms Saffin said.
"This is so much better than dealing with a call centre.
"I have made repeated calls for a local presence on the ground; for boots on the ground with their notebooks, for Government Agency representatives to come to local people who need their help the most and to offer face-to-face, practical and compassionate assistance."
To complement the door knocking program, Mobile Recovery Points will be set up at the following locations and times:
- Goonellabah - fortnightly from May 19;
- Koori Mail - weekly from Tuesday May 17; and
- South Lismore Train Station - weekly from Friday May 20.
