The NSW Rural Fire Service has posted a tribute to firefighter Senior Deputy Captain John Holmes, who died while fighting a blaze near Bonalbo on Saturday.

Fellow RFS members rendered medical assistance including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator, until ambulance officers arrived.
RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers said the man's tragic death is a solemn reminder about the dangers faced by members.
"This is a terrible tragedy, where a volunteer helping protect his community has paid the ultimate sacrifice," Commissioner Rogers said.
"Our thoughts are with his family, friends and firefighting colleagues at this terrible time. We are offering every assistance to his family and fellow brigade members."
"Yesterday morning the RFS suffered a great loss with the tragic passing of Senior Deputy Captain John Holmes. John was helping battle the Bean Creek Fire, approximately 15km north of Bonalbo (in the Kyogle LGA), when he suffered a fatal medical episode," the fire service said.

"John joined the Mallanganee RFS Brigade in 1971 and quickly became an enduring and dedicated member. His unwavering commitment was recognised with a Life Membership in June 2022, marking an inspirational volunteer career of more than five decades.
"John was of course more than a volunteer firefighter; he was a role model and mentor to many, with his exceptional skills and hard work earning him numerous accolades throughout his career. John's legacy will forever be proudly etched in the history of the RFS and the Mallanganee Brigade.
"His passing will be deeply felt, but John's memory will continue to inspire his fellow members. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and RFS colleagues during this difficult time."
The Northern Rivers Zone RFS said John was "an absolute legend of Mallanganee RFB and very much loved by the rest of us. Thanks to all the crew and services that have assisted during this challenging time".
