And while it is pretty whimsical, it doesn't happen by magic - scores of people work furiously behind the scenes to make it all come to life.
But, they could use a little help if you have time to spare.
Jyllie Jackson and her crew from LightnUp are the creative minds behind the event and they have been bringing light to the CBD for more than 30 years.
There are a number of ways you can be a part of the magic.
You can take part in a number of workshops to help build lanterns. Or, you could carry one in the parade.
Jyllie is keen to find someone who is keen to carry the gorgeous "elements" lanterns, that represent earth, wind, fire, and water. While they are big, she says they aren't too heavy and you wear them like a backpack.

She also needs some help transporting lanterns to the event on Saturday June 22, and then bringing them home to the Keen St workshop on Sunday. Helpers are needed from 9am to noon on Saturday, and 9.30am to 12.30pm on Sunday.
Jyllie is also calling out for performers to hit the Heartbeats Festival Stage between 9am - noon in the CBD, and for help marshalling.
Perhaps, you'd like to take part in the Fiery Finale, the showstopper at the end of the night?
